Getting to Stanage Edge

Stanage Edge sits above Hathersage in the Peak District National Park, Derbyshire. Most visitors arrive by car; the Hope Valley railway line is the best public transport option.

By train

Hathersage station

Hathersage on the Hope Valley line (Manchester–Sheffield via the Peak District) is the nearest station. From the station it is roughly 2 km uphill to the edge via footpaths through North Lees — allow 30–40 minutes walking with kit.

Services run regularly through the day. Check National Rail for live times. From Sheffield the journey is about 25 minutes; from Manchester about 45 minutes.

By car

Road access

The A625 Sheffield–Hathersage road runs below the edge. Car parks fill early on sunny weekends — see Practicals for parking and campsite detail.

From Sheffield A625 through Totley and Fox House, then continue to Hathersage and Stanage-side car parks (approx. 30 min).
From Manchester M67 → A57 Snake Pass or A6 through Buxton, then A625 to Hathersage (approx. 60–75 min depending on route).
From the south M1 to junction 29, A6187 through Bamford and Hathersage.
Sat nav Search for Hathersage or Dennis Knoll car park (main Stanage access). Do not follow routes over the edge itself — access is via marked roads and car parks only.
Narrow lanes and farm gates near North Lees. Drive slowly, give way to walkers and livestock, and never block farm access.

On foot from the village

Walking in from Hathersage

From Hathersage village, signed paths lead north through North Lees Hall estate towards the plantation and onto the edge. Our Stanage Edge circular walk guide starts from the village and covers the full route with grid references.

The climb from the valley is steady rather than steep, but paths can be muddy after rain. Wear boots and carry a map (OS Explorer OL1 Dark Peak).
